Attention, Bird-Watchers

Bird-watching is very popular in Utah. A variety of species can be found in the diverse environments. If bird-watching is your interest, the rivers and lakes in the Vernal area may prove to be particularly enjoyable. The Ouray National Wildlife Refuge south of Vernal is bird-watching heaven. Waterfowl and shorebirds can be found in abundance. Look for the rare eastern kingbird and the Lewis’ woodpecker.

There are many places in Utah to see waterfowl and shorebirds. A few places to try are the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Matheson Wetlands Preserve, the Logan River bottoms, Desert Lake in Price, and Clear Lake in Delta.

For a bird-watching trip that’s really off the beaten track, the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge in the west desert of Utah is a prime choice. It’s rather out of the way (a few hours off the freeway), but for the enthusiastic ornithologist, it’s well worth the extra traveling time. The refuge offers stunning desert beauty and is home to many birds of prey. Spring and fall are the best times to visit. Summer can be very hot. It’s a good dirt road, but it can be messy in the winter even with a 4WD. You’ll want to dodge snowstorms—the wind and snow can really blow.

Take binoculars and a bird book. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes. Call (435) 693-3122 to check on road conditions.
